You don’t have to change to do this

398158_10150542972256052_1225312895_nThis first pictures was 5 years ago. I was doing what I loved. Presenting for our Young Professionals organization to a ballroom filled with hundreds of people and sharing an amazing vision for what lied ahead for our community and its business leaders.

Most people thought I was crazy.  CRAZY! (so did I a little) But, I knew I was smart and I saw the opportunity.

And look, here I am, still getting to do what I love. Presenting in front of a room of hundreds of people and share an amazing vision for what lies ahead for my family, my teammates, and our company of business leaders.

I still am doing what I love. And now I get to do it on my terms. Around my family. Make more money. Provide an even better future. And dream bigger.

The moral of this story is, you don’t have to give things up to do this. You don’t have to change what you love to do this. You just have to BE YOU to do this and to have a big dream that you are willing to go after.

Thinking differently can make bigger things happen

We just achieved a major milestone…. 1 Million in sales in 2016. I can’t believe it myself. But it happened, and hit happened because we thought DIFFERENTLY. We stepped out of the box when starting a business.

Here is how…

Are you starting a business? It needs to be online.

Headlines these past weeks announced Macy’s, Kmart, and Sears are closing stores. The Limited “closes all 250 stores, but their website will stay open for business.” More and more major retailers are admitting that the power of E-Commerce is stronger than traditional brick & mortar.

Stores across the country are closing. In my hometown, I just heard Macy’s is closing it’s doors, laying off 53 employees. If you are in any kind of retail business, it is a time of uncertainty…. unless you are moving toward online sales.

Times are changing. Where did you do most of your holiday shopping this year? I went to one store for one gift. The rest of my shopping was online. We are creating this change. We love the ease of ordering from our phone at night sitting on the couch watching TV. We love that things get delivered right to our door. Online shopping is a trend that won’t be leaving soon.

So, what does that mean for those wanting to start a business?

You need to be online.

Many people thought I was a little crazy for starting an online business a few years ago. The idea of network marketing was a little out of the box still, but the fact that Rodan + Fields was a completely digital business is what made me take the leap. I knew the online shopping industry was only going to grow.

And that has been proven over and over again these past few weeks and even years with stores closing. But it isn’t just shoppers moving to the online trend. Business owners love the model too.

It means that we can have customers not just in one town, but all over the country and the world. It means we don’t have to stock inventory, pay employees, rent, electricity, pricey insurance, and more. It allows us flexibility and time freedom. It allows us to best leverage growing social media marketing. The list goes on.

If you are looking to start your own business, definitely think digital. And I also highly recommend looking into a digital direct sales company. It is the way commerce is moving. You can either stand by and watch or ride the wave.

When should you join a network marketing company

When should I jump into a network marketing business?

I get this question a lot because it is all about timing… timing in the company, in the country, and in your life. So how do you figure out when is right?

I have no concrete answer for you. It is 100% up to you to decide, but I can give you some tips that will help you make a decision that feels right for you.

1. It’s like having a baby. We want everything to be “ready.” Our finances in line, our careers in a good spot, etc. etc. Then, like me and my hubby and surprise! You are having a baby! And guess what, we couldn’t imagine it any other way right now. That is how starting your own business is. If you wait for everything to be “perfect,” guess what? You will never start that business. Because nothing will ever be just right. Sometimes you just need to go for it.

The advice I give is, after you got all the information on the company and how it works, sleep on it. If you wake up the next day with it still on your mind, then that is a sign you are ready to go for it. If you woke up the next day and forgot about it or weren’t excited about it, well, then that means it’s probably not for you.

The biggest regret my business partners tell me is that they wish they would have started sooner.

2. Know the trends for the company you are joining and for the market that company is in. I’m going to use the skin care market and Rodan + Fields because I know that best, but this applies to any company. When I started I did my research. The skin care market has been continually on the rise for many years and had a growth projection that was incredible. And not just in the US, but globally, which is also very important. I also looked at other markets related to skin care. Consumers and how they shopped. Shopping is continuing to grow in the online platform so I wanted to tap into that component and made sure the company I chose was a virtual platform. Also, the consumer demographic for skin care was developing… a large amount of our population (which we in the US call the baby boomers) were now entering their 50s and 60s and worried about aging, and our young population was becoming very savvy about aging prevention. The trends were all pointing in the right direction. So doing your research on the market in a few different areas is key.

3. Know the company. You also want to research the company’s trends. Have they shown steady growth? Not just a giant spike now, but steady increases. You don’t want huge spikes that just happens once, but continual growth over the years. And if the company is brand new to your country, does it have solid growth in the countries it is currently in? You don’t want to get involved with a company that is expanding so fast they don’t have a stable foundation. It could be great but it also comes with incredible risk.

If the company has a solid business foundation in other countries and their products and services are solid as well, then jumping in at the beginning of their start in a new country can be an incredible opportunity for growth for you, plus it also gives a solid, respected foundation to stand on which means much less risk and the potential for great reward.

4. Ask about the future. Does the company have concrete plans for continued expansion globally? Do they have plans for new innovative products or services? You want to make sure they are not just riding a wave right now but already thinking ahead planning to ride the next one, and the next one, and be there with you for many years to come.

5. The fifth and final tip is the most important. You. Get the details you need. I encourage you to have a detailed phone, video, or in person conversation with a leader in the network marketing company you are interested in and ask a lot of questions that are important to you. Then, go with your gut. Remember when I shared if you wake up the next morning still excited about it, then take the leap? If you wake up and forgot about it, it likely isn’t for you. Our brains can make logical decisions very quickly on whether the opportunity is good or bad. We know if the information adds up. But our emotions tell us if it is the right fit for us and if we want to be a part a part of it. And that is the most important key to your success. It may be the best logical opportunity, but you also need to want it for you.

Why do network marketers brag about payday?

So, if you have a network marketing friend in your social media feed, chances are you have seen them make a post expressing their excitement for when they get their paycheck. At first I found it a bit distasteful. Really? You are bragging about how much money you make on facebook?

I’m a midwest girl. That is way out of my comfort zone to talk salaries and money. My grandma would give me ‘the look’ if she ever heard me ask someone how much they make.

But, I realized something lately. I’m starting to get why people in network marketing shout from the rooftops when they get paid. And it’s not really about the money. I still don’t think I’ll every be able to be so bold as to shout about my paycheck from the rooftops, but I do now understand why sharing what these paychecks have done for me and others is so important.
