Macy’s just announced it is closing more stores. And they aren’t the only ones.
When was the last time you shopped online? From your phone on your couch? This month? Probably this week?
We are moving to a digital world. Consumers are busy. We don’t have time to spend going from store to store looking for what we need. But we are attached to our iPhones all the time. So it is easy to shop while laying in bed at night, in line the coffee shop, even sitting in the bathroom!
So, brick and mortar heavy businesses with their specific hours and locations are having a tougher time competing with virtual franchises.
I work for one of those virtual franchises, Rodan + Fields. I’ve always wanted to own my own business, but the logistics of it were tough. What if we wanted to move to a new city? What if I wanted to take a vacation with my family? How much money would I have to spend to stock inventory, pay rent, electricity, employees, marketing and advertising? It just wasn’t flexible. Not to mention, my potential clients all didn’t live just down the block from my doors. They had the potential to be all over the US and beyond. I knew I needed to go digital.
Even retail giant Wal-Mart is closing doors… 154 to be exact as it focuses on its e-commerce business. http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2016/01/15/list-of-walmart-stores-closing/78852898/
If Macy’s and Wal-Mart are seeing the digital light, shouldn’t we all be? The world isn’t just moving in the web-based commerce direction, we are already there, and it is only going to get bigger. Are you aligning yourself and your business ventures along this path? It’s almost necessary for success these days.
