Thinking differently can make bigger things happen

We just achieved a major milestone…. 1 Million in sales in 2016. I can’t believe it myself. But it happened, and hit happened because we thought DIFFERENTLY. We stepped out of the box when starting a business.

Here is how…

Are you starting a business? It needs to be online.

Headlines these past weeks announced Macy’s, Kmart, and Sears are closing stores. The Limited “closes all 250 stores, but their website will stay open for business.” More and more major retailers are admitting that the power of E-Commerce is stronger than traditional brick & mortar.
Stores across the country are closing. In my hometown, I just heard Macy’s is closing it’s doors, laying off 53 employees. If you are in any kind of retail business, it is a time of uncertainty…. unless you are moving toward online sales.

Times are changing. Where did you do most of your holiday shopping this year? I went to one store for one gift. The rest of my shopping was online. We are creating this change. We love the ease of ordering from our phone at night sitting on the couch watching TV. We love that things get delivered right to our door. Online shopping is a trend that won’t be leaving soon.

So, what does that mean for those wanting to start a business?

You need to be online.

Many people thought I was a little crazy for starting an online business a few years ago. The idea of network marketing was a little out of the box still, but the fact that Rodan + Fields was a completely digital business is what made me take the leap. I knew the online shopping industry was only going to grow.

And that has been proven over and over again these past few weeks and even years with stores closing. But it isn’t just shoppers moving to the online trend. Business owners love the model too.

It means that we can have customers not just in one town, but all over the country and the world. It means we don’t have to stock inventory, pay employees, rent, electricity, pricey insurance, and more. It allows us flexibility and time freedom. It allows us to best leverage growing social media marketing. The list goes on.

If you are looking to start your own business, definitely think digital. And I also highly recommend looking into a digital direct sales company. It is the way commerce is moving. You can either stand by and watch or ride the wave.

Haven’t found your passion? That’s okay.

I’m exhausted. Exhausted from searching. It’s like a never ending game of hide and seek. My “passion” that I am supposed to be finding… it’s lost.

And I decided today that I’m done looking for it.

Okay, maybe that sounds a little extreme. Or maybe like I’m giving up. But I had a realization this week and I’m giving myself grace and embracing the seasons.

I have been feeling the pressure lately, and I think so many others are feeling it too. The pressure by society, by life coaches, by social media to find our passion. To do the “thing” we were put on this earth to do. To love every second of doing what we are doing and do it for the rest of our lives! Even as a kid we get asked… What do you want to be when you grow up?

Well, what if we don’t know? Or what if we thought we knew, but now things have changed? What if we are doing our passion but in a few years things change?

I realized that our passion isn’t something that needs to be found then held on to forever. Our passions are seasons. They come, they go, they change. We enjoy them and we look forward to the next.

When I was little, I thought my passion was Archeology. Loved it. I wanted to sit and dig in the dirt forever. Um… yeah, I’ve never been an archeologist.

But after college my passion was events. I loved the planning. I loved going to my job very

Doing what I love, planning events. This one was a local winter triathlon.

day and thrived on the excitement and pressure of launching a successful event. But then a new opportunity came up and I switch careers and through my new career I found a love for community and helping it grow, especially in the area of young professionals. I dove in. I dedicated my job and my free time to making our community better for young people. I had plans of service on city council and foundations and boards. I was making a big impact in our city and how leadership was developed.

Then,  I had a baby. Oh, how things changed. My passion became my children. I left my

job. Dove into motherhood. Made homemade baby food and started a family blog. I wanted a bit of a career too. I stayed a little involved in the community and young professionals organizations and was out to prove I could be a stay-at-home mom and a community leader too.

So far, that has been a lot of seasons of different passions I’ve been through. And now I am in another season. That of direct sales with Rodan + Fields. I’m motivated to help so many other business men and women succeed and still be able to be an at-home mom.

Until the other day I used the think that I still was searching for my passion. The one thing that was mine forever. Was it Rodan + Fields? Was it something else I should be doing? What do I love? What do I desire most?

My current passion.. My Rodan + Fields job, inspiring others to follow their dreams and how they can do it through direct sales.

These questions made me feel so pressured. Like a failure for being in my 30s and maybe not have even found my passion yet. So, that’s when I gave up looking. Why was I searching? I realized all those things that I had done in my past and the career I have now… They all were my passions! I don’t have to be stuck to one thing. I am a human being. The best part about being human is the ability to change!

Our passions are seasons. We find what we love. We enjoy every minute of it. And, it better be something we are learning from, growing in. And if it is, well then, it only makes sense that we grow out of it! We learn more, become more, new things happen to ourselves and our lives, and we take a different path that leads us to a new love! The new perfect passion for this time in our lives.

All the passions I’ve had before have lead me to this current season in direct sales. It is the perfect fit for me. Allowing for the love of my family and call to be home with them yet feeding my entrepreneurial soul. I am thriving in this field! Do I look forward and wonder if this season will end? Possibly. It may. I don’t know when. Or maybe it will evolve. Lead me to another integral piece of my passion.

Ahhhhh. I feel like I can breathe again! The pressure is off! There is no push to find this unattainable perfect passion I am “supposed” do to for the rest of my life. I am going to stop and enjoy the season I am in. Enjoy the current passion I have found. And when the day comes when things shift and change, I will grow with them and explore new passions. I hope to experience many of these seasons throughout my life and look forward to them all.

Here’s to you and the passion your are in now and the passions yet to come! Enjoy your season!

R+F Review: I’m not a skincare type of person…

Young beauty blogger, Arctic Sabrina, gives her candid thoughts on some of Rodan + Fields products. I love that she has a unique perspective as a young adult and someone who isn’t “really a skin-care type of person” as she refers to herself. It is great to hear a perspective from someone who has a very neutral stance on skin care.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Rodan + Fields, Sabrina!

I’m not going to lie to you, I’m really not a skincare type of person. That’s not to say I don’t have my fair amount of issues with my skin – it’s incredibly sen…

Are you generating RESIDUAL income?

When my husband and I are on a long drive we spend our time talking about our 3-5 year plan. What we want for our future. We realized on our drive last weekend that anything we ever do moving forward will only be something that creates residual income. Something where the income continues to grow even after our initial effort has been expended. The work we do now, continues to increase our income without us having to do more work.

It just makes sense, doesn’t it? It is how we can retire early. Send our kids to college. How I can be outside on this beautiful sunny Wednesday instead of in an office, yet still be generating an income beyond what I did in my full-time marketing career.

So what is Residual Income and how does it work?

Residual income (also called passive, or recurring income) is income that continues to be generated after the initial effort has been expended. Compare this to what most people do to earn money: linear income, which is a one time payment payment in the form of a fee, wage, commission or salary.

Linear income is directly proportional to the number of hours invested in it, usually 40 hours a week. You always get the same paycheck. Nice right?

But even nicer is residual income. Residual income is income that once things are set in motion, you continue making money from your initial efforts and hours put in without having to put in more to earn more.

This allows me what I cherish most… time freedom!

There are many ways to earn residual income. I chose the direct sales/network marketing avenue with Rodan + Fields. But here are a few others that work for people and that my husband and I are looking into adding into that 3-5 year plan I was talking about.

1) Writing a book, designing an app, or creating a program then giving it to a company that agrees to pay you a percentage of each copy of your work sold in the future.

2) Actors and recording artists draw residual income from each of the movies, TV shows, or commercials, each time they run.

3) Purchase real estate that earns you recurring income through lease or rental payments.

These ways of earning residual income generally aren’t that easy to implement. Especially if you want to jump in right away. May cost a large amount of money up front or require a natural talent or years of education. So, here are some additional residual income ideas that almost anyone can start at anytime.

4) Start a savings and investment program that pays you interest or dividends.

5) Join a legitimate direct sales or network marketing company where you can grow a team. Also make sure this company has consumable products that customers continue to use and purchase.

AAEAAQAAAAAAAAmHAAAAJDE4ZmI2N2Q1LWVhNmItNDAxMy05N2QwLTQxYjgyMzQwYzIxYg.pngI loved my salaried career in marketing. It was engaging, exciting, and something I loved. Believe me, I never thought a career in direct sales would be what I would end up doing. But now, we know we can never go back to a standard hours worked, same paycheck received for the rest of our lives. All our future financial plans now revolve around adding residual income.

I get to spend my day with my family and kids. I work when I want around my schedule. I don’t have to worry about being laid off or downsized. I get to reinvest my residual income into more residual income opportunities to keep my income growing in a variety of avenues.

We’d love to share what we have learned on this journey and how its changed our financial outlook. Ask us. Is it different than the traditional way of working and earning, yes. But it is so worth it!

Showing my little girls they can do ANYthing

This still brings tears to my eyes even just thinking about it…

So a few days ago, I came out of my bedroom from getting ready for an event. Evie had all these chairs set up with all her stuffed animals on them.

IMG_8192“Evie, what are you doing?”

“I’m getting ready for a presentation like you mom.”

Then she sat on the chair and asked if I would give them all my presentation. So of course I say yes and give them my little kid/stuffed animal version of what I would be presenting that night. Then Luke started to cry for food so I sat down to nurse Luke and I asked Evie…

“Evie, do YOU want to give us a presentation?”

And her eyes just lit up and she nodded. So, with me nursing my baby and Josie and all her stuffed animals watching, Evie stood at the front of the room and gave us a presentation of her own, beaming with pride.

IMG_8194I sit there with tears in my eyes and my heart full of gratitude.

THIS is why I do the job that I do. I get to be at home nursing my baby while still showing my little girls that they can do ANYTHING. That she can stand up in front of a room of people and speak and share and teach and inspire and be brave. That she can rock her babies all day AND be a career women and succeed.

Be still my heart. THIS is what you were meant to do, for you, for your babies, for your daughters, for your family. This, THIS is what Rodan + Fields is all about.

No public speaking necessary

I know this is probably weird to many, but I LOVE PUBLIC SPEAKING! I know, I’m insane, but I really do. I even used to teach it at the University level. That is just how much I love it.
13902576_10101909824688105_4266820421790908425_nBut when I became a stay at home mom I didn’t get to do that any more. I really missed it. I missed the thrill of standing in front of a crowd. I missed being able to passionately teach, share, express whatever I was presenting. I missed the questions afterwards. The comments. The feelings I got from people telling me that what I spoke about changed them, influenced them, or even just kept them entertained. I missed it all.

But, this is what I love so much about my job with Rodan + Fields. I get to get back in the public speaking saddle. And an even cooler thing is that I have teammates that HATE public speaking and guess what… they DON’T have to ever public speak in this job.

So how does that work? I get to do what I love and others hate and we still run the exact same business and do equally as well.

Rodan + Fields allows each consultant to use the specific skills unique to us to make our businesses successful. It might be public speaking like me or it might be awesome networking skills, or awesome graphic design talents, or your awesome teaching skills, or whatever. We get to run this business as our own, using the attributes that best work for us. I just love that… even more than public speaking!
And here is where the even more fun part comes in. We get to help each other with our strengths. So, these photos are from two recent events my team and I hosted this month. Because I love to speak, I get to stand up and share our products and business with the crowd of guests that my teammates brought. And when it comes to product demos, or event planning, or technology or any of the other things associated with this event… guess who steps in with their talents? My skilled teammates. Everyone uses and shares the skills they have to help everyone be successful.

So, if you are looking at any network marketing company, make sure the company allows you to use the skills you are best at, not make you fit into a specific mold. You are you. Utilize your talents and your business will succeed.
